What's her secret?

Last month I included a link to footage of an 80-year old Chinese man who exudes a ton of youthful energy. Lately I’m coming across articles about a 98-year old yoga teacher who gets about in bright-coloured yoga pants, red nails and high heels, and drives a grey Smart Car.

Her name is Täo Porchon-Lynch.

Her little pipe-cleaner legs slip into lotus position with ease, perhaps as a result of 90 years of practice (she discovered yoga when she was 8). Then again, she’s had three hip replacements.

When she’s not teaching yoga she’s practising ballroom dancing with her 25-year old dance partner. They compete. She started ballroom dancing at 85, though she’d been a dancer in nightclubs in World War Two.

Täo was born in India, her parents were Indian and French, and she’s hung out with Ghandi, Deepak Chopra and the Dalai Lama.

These days she lives by herself in a hamlet on the outskirts of New York City.

Some of you will be impressed that she doesn’t drink water (I don’t know why). Just tea, juice and wine. In fact, she and her late husband founded the American Wine Society.

Before you get too excited, I doubt that wine is the key to her energy. What seems to drive Täo is that she has a purpose. She has yoga pupils who rely on her and she’s invited to yoga festivals all over the world. She’s not sitting around complaining or waiting to die.

Maybe she just has great genes, or maybe the best thing we can do for our own health is to create a compelling reason to get up in the morning. A good-looking 25-year old dancing partner could help a lot there.

Here’s a video of her dancing as a fresh young 91-year old, but you can also find her on You Tube competing on America’s Got Talent in 2015.
