Ten tips to turn around your lifestyle in just one day (Part 1)

A healthy lifestyle makes a huge difference, but it’s easy to be in ‘gonna’ mode for a long time. If you’ve been telling yourself you need to do things differently but haven’t, this is for you. See what you can change in 24 hours.

Start your day with… water
Make it your first drink of the morning. If you know you need to drink more water than you do, fill a jug and make sure you finish it by the end of the day. Have a couple of glasses between meals. Add mint leaves or a squeeze of lime if that makes it more palatable.

Want to get in the habit of regular exercise but complacency’s winning out? Perfect, do it before your day starts. It’ll leave you feeling better mentally and physically.

Eat a smart breakfast
I mean the kind that’ll set you up for the day. Have a handful of simple but healthy breakfasts you can draw on, such as eggs (scrambled, frittata, and so on), leftovers, or healthy wholegrains (e.g. bircher muesli with yoghurt).

Need ideas? See Maggie’s book in the previous post.

Plan the day
Eat breakfast calmly and use that time to think through the rest of the day. What’s in your schedule? How can you fit some incidental activity into it?  Where can you use the stairs or walk the long way? Can you also walk around while you’re on the phone?

What about lunch and dinner? Need to thaw anything out or pick up something extra? Four out of five Australian adults don’t eat enough vegetables and fruit — are you set up to be the one in five who does?

And when will you drink those glasses of water?

If you’ll be on the go for a few hours without access to nutritious food, do you need to take water and healthy snacks with you?

Break up your sitting time
If you need to spend a lot of the day in a chair, aim to stand up at least every 30 minutes (every 15 or 20 minutes is even better). Stretch, have a short walk if you can, and take a few deep breaths to relax.

Great job so far. See the next post for the next five tips.
